This is a class blog for the course Film and New York City HUN 196.53558
This course focuses on New York City’s quintessential role in film history and as the launching pad of the entertainment industry. The cluster will particularly focus on New York City’s cultural and ethnic diversity as reflected in film, television and more recently, on-line media. How has this center of mass media production and consumption influenced the image of America as a “melting pot” and the land of opportunity? Through screenings, lectures and discussion we will analyze the various cultural, historical, and social dimensions of New York City as portrayed in films such as Hester Street, Westside Story, Gangs of New York and Do The Right Thing. The course will demonstrate that New York City has been a key production and exhibition center in film and media for over a century.
